Morley Nelson Birds of Prey National Conservation Area Science Working Group

The Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area (BOP-NCA) Science Working Group (SWG) was formed to coordinate existing and proposed research and management plans in the BOP-NCA, and to promote collaborative science and management partnerships in support of technology transfer to agencies and organizations responsible for rangeland restoration throughout the northern Great Basin. In addition to direct technology transfer applications to BLM NCA managers, this working group will also coordinate with other local and regional science and management programs such as the Great Basin Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GB-LCC), Great Basin Fire Science Delivery Project (GB-FSD), Great Basin Reynolds Critical Zone Observatory (GB-CZO), Great Basin Long-Term Agro-Ecosystem Research Program (GB-LTAR), Sagebrush-Steppe Treatment Evaluation Project (SageSTEP), Great Basin Native Plant Project (GBNPP), and other DOI, USDA and NSF-sponsored projects in wildlife biology, rangeland restoration and management.

Anticipated Outcomes:

  • An organizational structure to facilitate research and management collaboration among participants in the BOP-NCA.
  • Demonstration and pilot projects for science-based adaptive management.
  • Cooperative development of a National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) science plan for the BOP-NCA under the 2007 NLCS Science Strategy.
  • Pursuit of LTER status for the BOP-NCA as there are currently no Great Basin locations in the LTER system.
  • Collaboration and coordination of specific research projects subject to funding availability.
  • Webinar series highlighting BOP-NCA research and management programs.
  • BOP-NCA-SWG website under GBRMP.
  • Catalog of existing and proposed future research projects at BOP-NCA.
  • Consolidated historical information and publications for BOP-NCA including: Initial legislation and organizational documents; referenced national herbarium database; consolidated raptor research bibliography; conference proceedings and journal article database for BOP-NCA research; consolidated historical management information for BOP including vegetation trends and livestock use.
